The Kiwanis of Gateway Lafayette was chartered in April, 2002. Our club is dedicated to improving the lives of children in the north Lafayette community schools and shelters.
Service projects are a primary focus of the Gateway Kiwanis Club. Our past service projects have included a monetary donation to N. P. Moss Middle School for art and music supplies used by the junior high students; a “hands-on” landscaping project” for the Stepping Stones Shelter for Girls; participation in the toy drive sponsored by Carencro Catholic Elementary School; bicycles donated to the most improved students at N. P. Moss Middle School.
Several Gateway Kiwanis members are active in the mentoring program hosted by the school system. They devote an hour each week to reading with students in our public schools. Their involvement has had a direct impact on the improvement of students’ reading skills, some by as much as three grade levels.
Fundraisers are an important aspect of Kiwanis commitment. The Gateway Kiwanis club has hosted three successful annual golf tournaments. Over $8,000 has been raised and these funds are for the sole purpose of sponsoring programs or activities for our community children. The first annual boiled crawfish ticket sale was held in February, 2005. Over $1,300 was raised to fund the bicycle donation to the most improved students once again.
Kiwanis Clubs meet weekly. Dues are accepted on an annual or semi-annual basis. Attendance at meetings is not mandatory, but is encouraged.
